April 22: Jesus Taught me the Right way to Live

The Sharing Time Lesson talks about four things Jesus wants us to do: Hunger and Thirst after righteousness, Let your light shine, Love your enemies, and Pray to Heavenly Father.

I think our primary could use some help with “Let your light shine.”

Opening song: 164 I will follow God’s plan for me

Reverence Song: As a Child of God (Sharing time outline)

Objectives:

Explain what it means to have your light shine every day: The light of Christ is in us all and we share that light with others by being happy, being kind, loving everyone, etc, and bearing our testimonies. If we are focused on shining in the world because of selfishness or pride then we will not make other people happy. for example if someone shows off their skill at singing or gymnastics or dancing or karate because they want people to say what a good job they did, that is showing off. If they share their skills to help people or express a message of love or beauty or strength then the Holy Spirit can share that message to the hearts of other people. If our motives are good then the Holy Spirit will help us to do great things and our light will shine to many people.

Help the kids gain confidence to be a shining light in the world.

Practice these songs: When He comes again, Mother, Tell me the Story, Happy Family

Attention Activity:

Show the kids a bright camping light or flashlight, and ask the question: what does it mean to let your light shine? As a hint remind the kids of the similarities between ASL “light” and “inspiration” (the sign for inspiration is the same a light except it is contained within your torso instead of being above your shoulders.)

So, what is the light inside of us? Let’s sing some songs to answer the question!

Here’s what I actually did the Sr Primary version: I walked to the front and without saying a word started shining my bright flashlight at the kids. I had someone turn out the light. I asked the kids what I was doing, they said shining the light in their eyes! The lesson labels were still up on the board so I shone the light on the words “Jesus wants us to let our light shine” And I asked, “what does Jesus want us to do? Then we talked about what the light is–the light of Christ. And the I pulled out a small hand mirror. I turned around the flashlight and used the mirror to reflect the light into the kids eyes. They thought it was cool. I asked them what the mirror was doing, “reflecting the light into our eyes!” then I asked what we are supposed to do with the light that Jesus and the Holy Ghost give us? And the kids said, “reflect it to other people!” then I had the lights turned back on and i explained that there were shining stars hiding around the room. I asked, “are we supposed to hide our light? “no!” so let’s find the stars and help them shine by singing their songs! The I passed out some more small mirrors to the kids and had two helpers take my two flashlights around the room, reflecting the light while we sang the songs on the stars.

Lesson Plan:

Around the room I’ll have stars with the names of songs on them. Also there will be a question or scenario to talk about with the kids before and after each song. Choose songs that are appropriate for your primary, but here’s a list of suggestions. Songs we may sing: (I will choose 3-4 of these songs and add in the two we are working on this month)

160 Choose the Right way (from the lesson outline)
60 Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam (How can we shine for Jesus? We can choose the right, be kind, love one another, etc. The difference between showing off and sharing talents is a matter of attitude. If you are thinking about being better than someone else or how cool you are then you are showing off, if you want to share with someone then you will make them happy).
163 I am like a Star (How does being happy help other people? it lifts them up and makes them happy too!)
168 I want to be a missionary now (Why do we want to share the gospel with our friends? So they can be happy too!) Talking as opposed to telling (listening being the key ingredient).
158 Dare to do right (Is it hard sometimes to do the right? Will the Holy Ghost be with us when we are daring to do right? Yes!)
159 Stand for the Right (How can we stand for the right? ask for examples: Be honest, respectful, be fair, etc)
172 We’ll Bring the world His Truth (How have you been blessed with the gospel? How does it help you to know God’s plan for you? Is it hard for people who don’t know these things?)

Wrapping up:

Testify that the Light of Christ will shine through the kids when they listen for the Holy Ghost and pray (in their hearts) for help. Re-iterate any of the points from the objective section that need repeating. Encourage them to not be worried about what other people think of them, but instead focus on Christ and loving other people.

Closing Song: Choose the Right, remind the kids to think about the words they are singing and listen for the Holy Ghost to confirm that the words are true.

An excellent Ensign article about this topic: http://www.lds.org/ensign/1977/07/singing-hymns-with-new-power?lang=eng
